How to expertly brew holiday blend

brewing holiday blend

Looking for a cafe-quality cup of Holiday Blend at home? We recommend using our tried and true brewer The Kalita Wave Dripper for brewing. The Kalita features a flat-bottom with its patented wave filter to create an even and smooth coffee extraction. Our baristas prefer this brewer because it’s able to provide a fuller flavor and more balanced extraction when it comes to other temperamental pourover techniques.

The Breakdown

STEP ONE: BOIL WATER
Fill your Gooseneck water kettle up with fresh, cold water. Flip on the switch! We’re not looking for particular water temperature, we are going for water right off the boil.

STEP TWO: SET UP EQUIPMENT
Place your favorite mug on the scale, then put your Kalita Wave Brewer with a new filter on top. Press the tare button to zero out all that weight so your coffee and water measurements will be correct moving forward.

STEP THREE: MEASURE IT OUT
Measure out 25 grams of Holiday Blend coffee. We lean towards a stronger brew strength of a 1:15 ratio. When brewing for one, we’d recommend about 10 oz of coffee (375 grams), so divide 375 grams by 15 to get 25 grams. Pour your measured whole coffee beans into the grinder.

STEP FOUR: GRIND COFFEE
This brewing method is forgiving. We recommend a medium grind but encourage you to try a few grind profiles to dial in your brew cycle so it’s close to the three-minute mark. Pour your ground coffee into the Kalita Wave setup.

STEP FIVE: FIRST POUR
Slowly pour about 45 grams of hot water over the ground coffee to get the entire bed saturated. This step will allow your coffee to release gasses built up during the roasting process. Start your timer and wait for 10 seconds before moving on to the next step.

STEP SIX: SECOND POUR
After the 10-second pause, add hot water until your scale reaches 130 grams. Wait until your timer hits 1 minute 30 seconds before moving forward.

STEP SEVEN: THIRD POUR
When your timer reaches the 1 minute 30-second mark, add additional hot water until the scale reads 250 grams. Wait another minute, until your timer reaches the 2 minutes 30 seconds.

STEP EIGHT: FINAL POUR
Once your timer reaches the 2 minutes 30-second mark, add additional hot water until the scale reads 375 grams. It should drip for another minute or so then it’s ready to enjoy!
