Mustefa Abakeno has earned a remarkable reputation in the specialty coffee world through his commitment to continuous improvement and meticulous stewardship.

Farming 18 hectares in Beshasha Kebele in the Jimma zone of Western Ethiopia, he not only cultivates his own coffee but also helped found two co-ops—Hunda Oli and Kata Meduga Union. There, he processes cherry from his farm as well as from 36 neighboring smallholders who trust him to showcase their coffee at its highest potential. Mustefa was among the first producers to adopt direct export when it became legal in 2017, beginning his own exports in 2018 and quickly establishing himself as a leader in quality and transparency.

Mustefa produces both washed and natural coffees, drying all lots under partial shade to maintain consistency and protect delicate flavors. During peak sunlight, he uses shade netting to control temperature and UV exposure, slowing the drying process to prevent parchment cracking and preserve volatile aromatic compounds. This thoughtful approach results in coffees with exceptional clarity and balance. This particular washed lot exemplifies that precision: a clean, articulate profile that remains luminous and expressive from hot to cool in the cup.
