Behind the cup

This unique Ethiopian combines coffees from two historically significant regions in coffee production that represent the birthplace of Arabica coffee: Limu and Yirgacheffe. Similar in flavor profile, we find deep juicy notes and mellow oolong tea in this cup.

Farmlevel Story

This coffee combines two similar coffees: one from Limu and one from Yirgacheffe. The Limu coffee comes from the Western part of Ethiopia near the birthplace of Arabica coffee, lying within the Djimma zone in the western highlands of Oromia, Ethiopia.

Yirgacheffe is a district in Southern Ethiopia’s Sidamo region, and is widely recognized as one of coffee’s ‘birth regions’.  Washed coffees coming from this district are so well-known and sought after that Yirgacheffe is considered its own micro-region.

Farming methods in Yirgacheffe remain largely traditional. Yirgacheffe farmers typically intercrop their coffee plants with other food crops, a method common among smallholders because it maximizes land use and provides food for their families.  Additionally, most farms are also traditional and organic-by-default. Farmers in Yirgacheffe typically use very few—if any—fertilizers or pesticides. Most farm work is done manually and very few tasks are mechanized, even during processing.
