Behind The Cup

This lot comes from high-elevation farms in Veracruz and Puebla, where cool temperatures and foggy conditions slow cherry development and help preserve acidity and structure. Washed processing delivers a notably clean cup, allowing Black Cherry and Lime notes to remain clear and focused, while a restrained Cacao undertone contributes depth and nuance. Supported by a diverse mix of cultivars, including Geisha, SL-28, and Pacamara, the profile emphasizes structure and balance over intensity, reflecting La Perla’s broader goal of consistency, clarity, and long-term quality.

Each coffee is roasted to order. Orders ship in 1-2 business days.

Farmlevel Story

La Perla, meaning “The Pearl,” represents a long-term vision rooted in both land stewardship and community impact. The property was originally purchased in 1976 by Ernesto Pérez Villarreal, but remained largely untouched until 2021, when the first nursery was established and the project fully took shape. Located in the mountainous region of Ixhuacán de los Reyes, Veracruz, at elevations between 1,500 and 2,000 meters, La Perla benefits from a cool, foggy microclimate surrounded by oak and pine forests, steep ravines, and rich biodiversity.

Today, the project spans 60 hectares, with 25 planted in coffee and the remainder preserved as a protected forest. La Perla operates as both a research hub and a direct resource for neighboring producers. The nursery cultivates advanced genetics sourced from El Salvador, Panama, and Africa, including Panamanian Geisha, SL-28, Bourbon Tekisic, Marsellesa and Pacamara, which are shared with local farmers. The project also supports surrounding communities through access to organic compost, agronomic guidance, and premium cherry purchasing.

While this coffee comes from partner producers in Ixhuacán, Veracruz and Quimixtlán, Puebla, La Perla’s broader mission is consistent: to strengthen regional coffee quality and livelihoods through sustainable practices, shared infrastructure, and a commitment to long-term growth.
