Behind the cup

The Gatina Washing Station sits between the slopes of Mt. Kenya and the Aberdares mountains. This coffee leans on the juicier side with notes of stone fruit and mango, and a touch of sweetness. Kenyan coffees are classified by size: AB beans are those that are between 6 and 7 millimeters in size.

Each coffee is roasted to order. Orders ship in 1-2 business days.

Farmlevel Story

The Gatina Washing Station sits a bit outside of the town of Karatina in Nyeri County, nestled between the western slopes of Mt. Kenya and the eastern slopes of the Aberdares mountains. It’s managed by the Mugaga Farmers’ Cooperative Society, and receives cherries from 790 members (30% of which are women)

All together, the 790 members cultivate a total of 143 hectares, which breaks down to about a few hundred trees per farmer. These small coffee gardens make it possible for them to focus on specialty processing and increase the value per kilogram of cherries picked.
