Behind the cup
Vibrant and expressive, Larrea combines two dynamic origins to create a summer-ready cup. From Costa Rica, bright notes of Yellow Plum and Grapefruit deliver a citrusy lift, while Ethiopia adds Golden Raisin sweetness and a structured, lingering finish. Hot or iced, it’s a blend that dances across the palate with sunny energy.

Farmlevel Story
Crafted to capture the essence of summer, Larrea combines two exceptional coffees from Ethiopia and Costa Rica. The result is a bright, fruit-forward blend with pops of citrus, lingering red fruit depth, and a sparkling clarity that shines whether brewed hot or iced. It’s a playful yet composed cup that is perfect for long, sunlit days and easy afternoons.
The Ethiopian component comes from Guji, a region nestled between the better-known coffee zones of Sidamo and Yirgacheffe. Once grouped under its neighbors, Guji is now celebrated as a distinct origin thanks to its unique microclimate, high elevations, and rich cultural history. The coffees in this lot are grown by smallholder farmers practicing organic methods in rainforest-adjacent plots, many reaching altitudes of 2300 meters. The community shares milling resources and supports surrounding growers by buying and processing their cherries, fostering quality and regional resilience. The cup profile is clean, structured, and bursting with red fruit character, adding a composed, lingering base to the blend.
Complementing this is a Costa Rican lot called Esperanza, meaning hope. It comes from the Coopeldos cooperative in the Guanacaste Province, near the famed Monteverde Cloud Forest. Coopeldos, founded in 1971, now supports 342 producers, most farming just 1 to 1.5 hectares of land. As the region faces challenges like climate pressure and labor shortages, compounded by younger generations moving into tourism instead of farming, the co-op has stepped up. They’re investing in the future by offering farm management packages, varietal renovation programs, and flexible credit lines to keep production viable. As director Alejandro put it: “It’s not about the new generation taking over—it’s about getting them involved and excited so they want to.”
We first visited Coopeldos in Spring 2024, and were inspired by the passion behind the project. This lot contributes a vibrant citrus lift to Larrea, bringing balance and brightness to the blend’s profile, echoing the cooperative’s spirit of renewal and resilience.
