Out: 28-32 grams of coffee
The Sermon has always been a new take on an old classic. A round body, bittersweet chocolate notes, and a berry sweetness are what we consistently strive for. Each season, we taste dozens of offerings to find the perfect combination to achieve this end.
This season, we present a three-coffee blend hailing from South America and East Africa.
From Minas Gerais in Brazil comes a naturally-processed lot responsible for contributing body and baking chocolate flavors. Joining it from Southern Ethiopia’s Guji Highlands cooperative is a selection of naturally processed heirloom-variety coffees, sun-dried to maximize ripe fruit complexity. Last but not least - the glue that ties the blend together - from the ABADES producer group in Nariño, Colombia comes a Catuai lot representative of the milk chocolate flavors and citric acidity for which this region is lauded.

As a Santa Cruz to Los Angeles transplant (going on 15 years now though), I've been so happy seeing coffee from my hometown available in our shops here. When the pandemic started though, we just decided to that mega-coffee brand in bulk from Costco as a way to hunker down. A few months in, we realized that some things in life are worth splurging for, and discovered the Verve ships. So, we tried two types. They shipped immediately (from SC, not the LA location), and we received them 2 days later. The coffee was THE BOMB. We ordered both the Streetlevel and the Sermon. I'll be reordering both.
Life's short, buy good coffee.
Honestly, I think a lot of tasting notes that roasters use to describe their coffee are bs. The Sermon is a stunning exception to that. I literally taste blueberries and chocolate in my espresso. It’s vibrant, juicy, and rich with no hints of an underdeveloped roast that’s so common nowadays. It’s so so so so tasty. As the seasons change and green bean availability changes I hope Verve can maintain this flavor in the cup, because it’s the only bag I want to buy now.
Loved the taste of this roast and the delivery during Covid has been especially impressive!
A great all around crowd pleaser. Chocolate and blueberry are a great combination. Sermon is a great “tweener” for my wife, who prefers a more traditional toasty/chocolate coffee, and me, who prefers a more acidic/dynamic coffee. Verve has kept this blend amazingly consistent for the two plus years we have been buying it as our daily house espresso.
Just finishing 1 Kilo of Verve’s Sermon blend. Have loved it on espresso and as pour over. Roasted and shipped fresh the next day. The the berry notes punched out powerfully the first few days after roasting and then the chocolate seemed to emerge more as the the coffee matured over the next ten days. Will order this one again for sure!
Smells fantastic. Big ups for the free shipping which got to me lightning fast ⚡️5/5 would order again
Local coffee shop who got us hooked on Verve was closed for a couple of months. ... thankfully Verve filled our order quickly, saving the world from our coffee withdrawal attitudes!
I've been experimenting with a couple of your other roasts, but the Sermon is fave so far. And thank you Verve for processing those orders quickly. It's so nice to have great coffee to start my day.
Nice , full bodied ... good with milk ... but to get the best out of this beans I believe the grind needs to be precise ... when very fine or coarse it looses its real flavor ... I am constantly adjusting the grind but when I get it right it is so good !... still haven’t settled for that perfect spot after more than 500g of beans !...
We’re long time fans (We both order). My last order was a holiday gift for discriminating friends - Buena Visa, Sermon and Sea Bright because that’s the name of the town where they live. How wonderful to be able to share deliciousness in these dark days.
