Named after the Šumava National Park in the Czech Republic, Francisco Mena’s Sumava de Lourdes sits perched in the Lourdes de Naranjo micro-region of Costa Rica’sWest Valley - or “Valle Occidental”. Responsible for nearly 25% of Costa Rica's coffee production, the West Valley is characterized by slightly lower altitudes and drier climates than the neighboring Tarrazu region. All that doesn't stop the West Valley from maintaining a formidable track record in the Cup of Excellence, year after year.
Despite being relatively new to coffee farming, Francisco Mena - best known as the co-founder of Costa Rica’s premiere boutique coffee exporting operation, Exclusive Coffees - is a veteran of the coffee trade and one of the founding fathers of the “micro-mill” revolution that, well... Revolutionized the Costa Rican coffee industry in the early 2000’s.
Amidst Sumava’s cross-hatch of cypress trees, planted to protect against the fierce winds than careen between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Mena grows such varieties as Caturra, Gesha, SL-28 and Villasarchi. This selection of caturra from Sumava de Lourdes has been minimally de-pulped and de-mucilaged (earning it the classification of “black-honey”) using a Penagos eco-pulper before drying on raised beds for upwards of two weeks.
