Kenyan coffees are known for their unique and vibrant flavors. This cup starts with pomelo, then a balance of lemon and lime sweetness, followed by a burst of subtle florality with a deep mulberry sweetness carried throughout.

Ruarai, from the Ruthaka Cooperative, joins our menu this month. Ruarai is located south of Mount Kenya which provides rich volcanic sandy soil where coffee shrubs can thrive. Coffee production in Kenya is traditionally a culmination of cherries from multiple farms. Cooperatives deliver their cherries to a mill then they are processed together. Each lot released is a contribution from multiple farms. The communal effort and collaboration of flavors is reflective in this special cup.
Thank you for the prompt shipment and fresh roast date! This is a pleasant coffee. I ordered it because i had previously tried the Ruthaka, and found that coffee to be exceptional. This one is considerably less dynamic and complex than the Ruthaka, so I ultimately was not as enthusiastic about it, but it satisfied my need to include a Kenyan coffee for the week in my home lineup. I recorded the following sensory notes in my coffee log:
Verve Kenya Ruarai
Fragrence: masala sauce, green grape, vidalia onion.
Aroma: cooked pumpkin, dried apricot, raisin, chrysanthemum.
Flavor: hawflakes, passionfruit, raisin, red currant, geranium.
For comparison's sake, here are my previous notes on Ruthaka--a very different cup. Both coffees are well-roasted, but I find the website's recommendation that those who enjoy Ruthaka will also like Ruarai to be dubious, likely based on shared region of origin, and less on the sensory qualities of the seeds themselves.
I have never tried a cup quite like the Ruthaka; it's one of the most distinctive out of 65 bags that I have tried this year. The Ruarai, on the other hand, is good, but similar coffees are available from a number of other roasters.
We believe the coffee experience is our responsibility from seed to cup. Coffee is our craft, our ritual, our passion. It drives us and inspires us. With this simple truth and responsibility we are bridging the gap from farmlevel to streetlevel.
