    Shortly southwest of Antigua, on the eastern slopes of the behemoth Volcan Acatenango, lies the small municipality of Alotenango. In a time before the value of specialty coffee was realized, coffee from Alotenango would be sold as - and blended-in with - that with the name “Antigua” to profit from the premium associated with the region. Only recently has the industry begun to value coffees from Alotenango as a micro-region of its own, characterized by its volcanic topography and nearer proximity to the Caribbean sea.

    This year’s selection of coffee from Finca Candelaria was assembled through the extensive process of evaluating “day-lots” from the estate. A day-lot can represent anything from a plot, or location, on the farm to a specific day of harvest and can range from 5 to 50 (46 kg) bags. Over 7,000 bags of coffee from the Candelaria estate was evaluated by our green coffee buyers to select those which we felt best to represent this unique region.
