    Colonized by the English and the German in the 19th century, Papua New Guinea established the estate or plantation structure that was common practice by many European colonies. While some of the plantations exist as relics of the colonial era, today most of Papua New Guinea’s coffee is produced by smallholder subsistence farmers on 1-2 hectare “gardens”.

    Formed in 2008 the Keto Tapasi Progress Association is made of roughly 375 producers from 18 surrounding communities. Since opening, the association has used all premiums received from being Fair Trade Certified and Organic Certified to purchase depulpers, build receiving stations and purchase vessels of transportation.
