The Sermon has always been a new take on an old classic. A round body, bittersweet chocolate notes, and a berry sweetness are what we consistently strive for. Each season, we taste dozens of offerings to find the perfect combination to achieve this end.
This season, we present a three-coffee blend hailing from South America and East Africa.
From Minas Gerais in Brazil comes a naturally-processed lot responsible for contributing body and baking chocolate flavors. Joining it from Southern Ethiopia’s Guji Highlands cooperative is a selection of naturally processed heirloom-variety coffees, sun-dried to maximize ripe fruit complexity. Last but not least - the glue that ties the blend together - from the ABADES producer group in Nariño, Colombia comes a Catuai lot representative of the milk chocolate flavors and citric acidity for which this region is lauded.

As a Santa Cruz to Los Angeles transplant (going on 15 years now though), I've been so happy seeing coffee from my hometown available in our shops here. When the pandemic started though, we just decided to that mega-coffee brand in bulk from Costco as a way to hunker down. A few months in, we realized that some things in life are worth splurging for, and discovered the Verve ships. So, we tried two types. They shipped immediately (from SC, not the LA location), and we received them 2 days later. The coffee was THE BOMB. We ordered both the Streetlevel and the Sermon. I'll be reordering both.
Life's short, buy good coffee.
Honestly, I think a lot of tasting notes that roasters use to describe their coffee are bs. The Sermon is a stunning exception to that. I literally taste blueberries and chocolate in my espresso. It’s vibrant, juicy, and rich with no hints of an underdeveloped roast that’s so common nowadays. It’s so so so so tasty. As the seasons change and green bean availability changes I hope Verve can maintain this flavor in the cup, because it’s the only bag I want to buy now.
Loved the taste of this roast and the delivery during Covid has been especially impressive!
The expresso wasn't the same from the Sermon batch.
I know this is not the standard Verve usually adheres to regarding their products and customer service.
Hoping this is an isolated incident.
We're so sorry to hear that, David! Please reach out to our team so we can remedy this right away.
I've enjoyed this blend in the past, but I just finished up 2lbs of this and I haven't been able to get any flavors but "drinkable" out of it, with pourover or espresso. Maybe something wrong with this run? Two stars since I've really enjoyed it in the past (really did taste like blueberry pie!).
Thank you so much for the honest feedback, Phil. We'll pass it on to the team so we can help improve!
