Behind the cup

The Gamboa family is a longstanding partner who consistently produces high quality coffees. This lot comes from their farm Yasal, the highest-elevation coffee farm in Tarrazú, Costa Rica. We find citrus notes mixed with toasted coconut in this yield.

Each coffee is roasted to order. Orders ship in 1-2 business days.

Farmlevel Story

The Gamboa Family is a long standing farmlevel partner of ours. Emilio “Milo” Gamboa and his wife Laura Gamboa oversee the daily operations of their four farms as well as their mill at Montes de Oro. Coffee farming has been a part of the Gamboa Family’s livelihoods for generations, dating back to the 1800s. Emilio and Laura inherited the farm from Tutto Gamboa, Emilio’s father, and continue on the agricultural tradition with great intention put towards producing high-quality coffee.

Tutto Gamboa was amongst the first producers in the Tarrazú region to catalyze the micro-mill revolution of the early 2000s. After the rising costs of production decreased profit from the producers themselves, many farmers began to invest into milling their own coffees. This way the farmers had more control overall in processing and business relationships.

Yasal is the highest in elevation of their four farms, though coffee is grown on only five out of the fifty hectares that make it up. Finca El Yasal was once used to farm cattle, in 1980 the land became the highest-elevation coffee farm in Tarrazú. Combine the environmental advantages of El Yasal with the deep agronomic background of the Gambao Family and it is no wonder that we get to share such a wonderful offering year after year.
