    Farmlevel

Rugi Farmers Cooperative Society consists of the region's best wet mills with names like Mihuti, Igutha, Giathugu, Mweru, Kanyiriri, Gumba, Mutitu, and Karuna contribute to the cooperative since it's founding in 2005. The cooperative's collection zone borders Wajee Nature Park, a bird conservancy with over 10 hectares of unspoiled natural forest. The Wajee Nature Park is home to 126 local species of birds, plus species only known here such as the Hindes Babbler and Side-Striped Jackal. Coffee has intentionally been cultivated around the edges of the park as a buffer, and because of the healthy relationship between the birds and trees.

Of the 300 hundred cooperatives in Kenya, there is a general average between 500,000 to 600,000 smallholder members. Just over 60% of Kenya’s coffee is produced through cooperatives with Estates making up the rest. Typically a smallholder producer typically has a garden-like pot called a ‘shamba’ that holds their coffee, home and whatever animals and crops they grow on their homestead.
