First planted in the late 1800s, shortly after the country gained its independence from the Spanish, Nicaraguan coffee production gathered momentum in the mid-1900s at which time it was largely produced by European settlers.
Political and economic instability, hurricanes and revolutions stifled the specialty coffee industry through the 1900s beckoning non-governmental organizations like Fair Trade to unify small producers into cooperatives and grower societies. Today, small-holder farmers are at last targeting specialty markets and the lots resulting do not disappoint.
Jaime Blandon Rivera is one such small farmer, farming his 13-hectare finca La Montañita in Jinotega. After harvesting and pulping and a 15 hour fermentation, Jaime employs a shaded pre-drying before sun-drying on raised beds.
We believe the coffee experience is our responsibility from seed to cup. Coffee is our craft, our ritual, our passion. It drives us and inspires us. With this simple truth and responsibility we are bridging the gap from farmlevel to streetlevel.
