  • Farmlevel Story

The 1950 is our salute to the birthplace of coffee. Ethiopia is an incredibly diverse country in linguistic, cultural, and ecological terms – there is no single, monolithic flavor profile associated with its coffee. Our flagship Ethiopian blend celebrates the contributions of thousands of smallholder producers, often growing coffee on less than a hectare of land, and the unique complexity that results from their efforts. The 1950 blend’s components rotate seasonally to capture peak quality, and it currently comprises coffee from the Ambela and Gora Kone washing stations.

Ambela washing station is situated in the Binitu Ambela district in Ethiopia’s Guji zone. There, batches of coffee are washed with river water before fermenting for 36-48 hours and drying on raised beds. During coffee’s off-season, Ambela’s 6,000 contributing smallholders plant other crops, including maize and enset. Careful processing and legendary terroir merge to produce an extraordinarily clean cup, with hallmark notes of stone fruit and jasmine.

Gora Kone is located near the Nensebo river in the Arsi region, a short distance from Farmlevel favorite, Worka Sakaro. The washing station supports close to 800 smallholders, whose coffee farms average about 3 hectares each. The coffee is fermented fully submerged in freshwater from the Gerenbicho river before drying on raised beds set into the sloping hillside overlooking the mill. Gora Kone contributes structure and aromatic spice to the 1950.

Never run out of coffee again.

The 1950

I'm beginning to believe that there every coffee roasted by Verve is wonderful. Waking up to The 1950 every morning the past couple of weeks has been sheer pleasure -- a great way to start the day!

Thank you so much, Patti! We're stoked you are loving it.

Fabulous '50s

We are enjoying the latest batch of The 1950. It is a smooth, reliable go-to blend—prepared in a press pot and topped with steamed milk. We often try other Verve coffees for variety, but this one is in every order.

Verve 1950

We didn't love 1950. Oddly we had it a year ago and loved it and have been talking about it since and I finally ordered it and this batch seemed weak - almost watery every morning. Not sure what was different but we were a bit bummed out by it. The other one we ordered is great.

We're bummed to hear that The 1950 didn't live up to your past experience, Melissa. We wanted to share our golden brewing ratio with you. It's 15:1 (water to coffee). We hope you'll give The 1950 another go with those measurements! Keep us posted.

so good!!

I had never tried or heard of Verve coffee, but took a risk trying this after my sister raved about a different blend of Verve's. Needless to say, I absolutely LOVED IT. The flavor profile was so much up my alley that I've enjoyed drinking it black rather than with my usual splash of cream. Excited to try other Verve coffee!

Verve came through, 1950 not as much

This was my first venture into Verve coffee, taking advantage of the lockdown to try something outside of Washington State.

Ordering and delivery: 5 stars. The free shipping and extremely quick delivery time made me feel like I was ordering amazon prime 1 day shipping. They saved the day by having a well-priced chemex in stock after mine had a kitchen accident.

As for the 1950, I'm nearly through the bag, and I've been unable to fine tune the grind size to something I enjoy and brings out the flavor profile listed for this bean. I've been Brewing with a chemex and French press and have been using the 1zpresso jx to grind.

While I was able to find a nice medium between sour and bitter, this is the only bean in recent history where I've been unable to locate a brew recipe to bring out the flavors.

Enjoy The 1950 With
