Hibiscus, Watermelon, Dense
Before obtaining his export license in 2019 Gugu Abalulesa sold his cherry to a local cooperative that Verve extremely familiar with, Duromina, from the Kata Muduga Union. Gugu’s farm sits on 24 hectares of mostly shaded land with 40 raised drying beds and 24 employed pickers during the peak of harvest.
While Gugu currently only produces natural lots for sale, he operates a small-scale washing station on his farm to produce seeds that he uses on his own farm and sells to local seed banks but hopes to use his micromill to try some experimental washed lots for the 2020 season. In 2019 Gugu produces two grades of coffee, “Good Quality” that is seperated by cherry sorting and storage is exported under his name and “Second Grade” that is sold to Duromina.
Since Ethiopia opening up its borders for direct export with single producers this is our first direct trade relationships with a single producer in 8 years.
We believe the coffee experience is our responsibility from seed to cup. Coffee is our craft, our ritual, our passion. It drives us and inspires us. With this simple truth and responsibility we are bridging the gap from farmlevel to streetlevel.
